This was from Holy Skin & Bone, Kevin Corcoran’s blog:

Advertising is ubiquitous in our consumer culture. As Christ-followers, we are not immune to it or its effects. It could be argued in fact that the liturgy and sacraments of our consumer culture have more impact on our spiritual formation than the liturgy and sacraments of our churches. (Of course, part of the explanation of this fact, if it is a fact, might just be that most evangelical churches have abdicated the practice of meaningful liturgy and sacraments to our culture.)

Recently I’ve been looking at liturgies in a number of different faiths (Anglican, Orthodox, Jewish), because since I first experienced Catholic liturgy about eight months ago, I’ve been intrigued by it. Perhaps this desire I’m feeling, this curiosity towards liturgy (having an evangelical, liturgy-free background), is a byproduct of what Kevin is suggesting – that is, a reaction to the fact that the only liturgy, the only sacrament I’m being exposted to is that of our consumer culture, rather than the meaningful liturgy of the church.
